Is Palm Oil Vegan?

Yes, palm oil is vegan. Palm oil comes from the fruit of oil palm trees, so it isn’t an animal-derived ingredient. However, some vegans choose to avoid palm oil because of concerns about deforestation, wildlife and the environmental impact of palm oil production.

What Is Palm Oil?

Palm oil is an oil from the fruit of oil palm trees. it is widely used in food products because it yields a high amount compared to other oils and is cheap to make.

Is Palm Oil Vegan?

Palm oil is vegan because it does not contain any animal products (meat, fish, dairy, egg or other animal derived ingredients) unlike other oils and fats like lard or butter.

Why Do Some Vegans Avoid Palm Oil?

Some vegans choose not to consume palm oil because of the environmental and ethical concerns surrounding its production. Palm oil is widely produced around the world and when forests are cleared to make space for palm oil plantations this can result in deforestation and habitat loss.

The destruction of forests can have a serious impact on wildlife, including orangutans and other animals that rely on these habitats. Indigenous communities can also be affected when their land is cleared or taken for palm oil production. Burning or destroying native forests and plants can also contribute to climate change.

Because many vegans have strong ethical concerns about animal welfare and the environment, some choose to avoid palm oil because of these impacts.

It is important to remember that palm oil itself is vegan because it comes from plants. Choosing whether to consume it is a separate ethical decision, and not all vegans choose to avoid it.

Are There Sustainable Alternatives?

The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) is a non profit organisation that sets standards for pal oil production. Their aim is to make sure that sustainable palm oil creates a positive impact on communities and the environment by including farmers, retailers, investors and other stakeholders in palm oil production in their criteria and legislation. Some companies that are RSCO certifies include Hovis, Fox’s Burton’s Companies (including Jammie Dodgers) and Warburtons.
