Pumpkin Spice Mix

There is nothing quite like the warm, aromatic embrace of a pumpkin spice mix to signal the arrival of crisp autumn mornings and cozy evenings. This homemade pumpkin spice blend featuring cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice captures the essence of fall in a single spoonful. But don’t be fooled. Its uses extend far beyond pumpkin pie!

This versatile mix is the perfect substitute for cinnamon in a variety of recipes, adding depth and warmth to everything from classic cinnamon rolls to morning toast. A sprinkle over buttered bread transforms an ordinary snack into a comforting treat, while stirring it into warm oatmeal or porridge creates a breakfast that feels like a hug in a bowl. For an extra indulgent touch, blend it with softened butter to make a rich, spiced spread. It’s perfect for slathering over pancakes, waffles, or scones. It lasts very well if kept in an air tight container. It will keep for as long as the spices are good – check the date on the individual spice containers.

The beauty of making your own pumpkin spice blend is the ability to customize it to your taste. Want a little more kick? Increase the ginger. Prefer a richer, woodsy note? Boost the nutmeg or cloves. Unlike store bought versions, this DIY mix contains no preservatives or fillers—just pure, fragrant spices that will elevate your autumn (or year-round!) cooking and baking. I like to replace the cinnamon in recipes such as cinnamon rolls with this pumpkin spice blend to make these recipes even more autumnal.

So, whether you’re stirring it into a steaming mug of coffee, dusting it over roasted sweet potatoes, or incorporating it into your favourite desserts, this pumpkin spice mix is an essential staple for any kitchen. A pinch of this magic, and suddenly, everything tastes like autumn.
