How to Make Vegan Chocolate Cupcake Recipe
Step 1: Prepare the Cupcake Batter
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a 12-hole cupcake tin with paper cupcake cases.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the plain flour, caster sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt.
In a separate jug or bowl, whisk together the sunflower oil, maple syrup, soya milk and vanilla extract.
Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, mixing until you have a smooth, lump-free batter. Be careful not to overmix.
Step 2: Bake the Cupcakes
Divide the batter evenly between the cupcake cases, filling each one around two-thirds full.
Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the cupcakes have risen and spring back when lightly pressed.
Leave the cupcakes to cool completely on a wire rack before decorating.
Step 3: Make the Chocolate Buttercream
Beat the softened vegan butter block together with the vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.
Gradually add the sifted icing sugar and cocoa powder, mixing until the buttercream is light, fluffy and smooth.
Step 4: Decorate the Cupcakes
Transfer the buttercream to a piping bag fitted with your favourite star nozzle and pipe generous swirls onto each cooled cupcake.
Alternatively, spread the buttercream over each cupcake using a palette knife for a rustic finish.
Top Tips
- Don’t overmix the batter, as this can make the cupcakes less light.
- Allow the cupcakes to cool completely before decorating.
- Sift the cocoa powder and icing sugar for the smoothest buttercream.
- If the buttercream becomes too soft, chill it for 10–15 minutes before piping.
Variations
- Decorate with chocolate sprinkles or grated vegan chocolate.
- Add vegan chocolate chips to the cupcake batter.
- Fill the cupcakes with chocolate ganache or jam before icing.
- Top with fresh berries for a simple finishing touch.

Storage
Store the cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or refrigerate for up to 5 days. Bring them back to room temperature before serving so the buttercream softens. The undecorated cupcakes can also be frozen for up to 3 months.
