What Is Trex?

Trex is a vegetable fat made from vegetable oils that is sold in the UK. It is a solid white fat that is used in many baking recipes and is suitable for vegans.

What Is Trex Made From?

Trex is made from solidified vegetable oils. The ingredients are as follows –

Palm Oil, Rapeseed Oil (in varying proportions).

Is It Suitable For Vegans?

Trex is suitable for vegans because it does not contain any animal derived ingredients. Palm oil and rapeseed oil are made from plants which makes it a good substitute for butter in vegan baking.

Is Palm Oil Vegan?

Some vegans do not consume palm oil because it is so widely produced that it is the cause of mass deforestation. This results in habitat loss for wild animals including orangutans, indigenous communities are forced from their land and native trees and plants are burned or destroyed to clear land which contributes to climate change. Vegans have strong ethical beliefs and so may not consume palm oil because of these negative results of cultivating palm oil.

How To Use Trex

Trex can be used in any recipe that calls for butter. You can even use 20% less Trex than the recipe calls for because it does not contain water. I like to use it in my vegan buttercream recipe along side baking block because it adds structure to the buttercream. Without it you would have to add a lot more icing sugar which may be too sweet. You can also sued in cakes and cupcakes to get an airy, light sponge. It is also good for pastry because it does not contain water.
